Welcome to Brownbackistan
Kansas Artist Designs T-shirt to Help Save the Arts
Brownbackistan, a recent addition to Urban Dictionary, started circulating widely on Facebook in June. Because of Governor Sam Brownback's decisions, including the line-item veto of the House and Senate approved state budget that included funding for the KAC in January, the definition resonated with many Kansans, current and former.
With pages voicing dissatisfaction with Brownback popping up all over Facebook, Kansas artist Emily Eakes, was determined to contribute by designing the Welcome to Brownbackistan t-shirt, now being sold on Facebook. Before the store went live, it was decided that $2 from every sale would be donated to help support the arts in Kansas. Eakes graduated from Topeka West High School and went on to get her fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute. "I had a rich arts education in the Kansas public school system and I feel every community and every student deserves access to the same." said Emily.
Eakes initially sought partnerships with local arts organizations. She quickly discovered that regardless of their individual opinions, they didn't want to risk offending patrons nor donors. Organizations that will receive the donation dollars will not be released until after the donations are made.
