These bags are inspired by a gift from our Japanese home-stay girls this past summer. It's such a brilliant and simple concept: a square piece of fabric, in the case of the above, it's 2-sided, reversible. You tie opposite corners in knots and the other corners are put through the D-rings of the strap. Then tuck the knots in and then you have an awesome sizable tote bag. As I understand it, these are the Japanese equivalent to reusable grocery bags. I'm hoping to be able to sell them, but I'm finding I'm not really a great product photographer. And that can affect sales. I do think if I have an opportunity to sell in person, I might do okay. I have had people tell me they'd buy them if I was sellin' :) Let's hope! :) Handmade Bags by filthEdesign 12/28/2011
My first bag! It's reversible, grey solid on the inside. It's similar to a bag that our Japanese home stay girls gifted me with this summer. I believe they are the Japanese equivalent of reusable grocery bags. I'm excited to start making them and see if I can sell them in my etsy store...or maybe here online :) Eventually I would like to design the fabric as well as construct the bags. I love the way it turned out! Support local and independent artists, crafters and designers this holiday season! Van Go, Inc. will be hosing the 3rd annual LOLA Giant craft show and fair. For Immediate Release Contact: JD Lindman Phone: 773-369-6126 Email: jdlindman@gmail.com Welcome to Brownbackistan Kansas Artist Designs T-shirt to Help Save the Arts Lawrence, KS Brownbackistan, a recent addition to Urban Dictionary, started circulating widely on Facebook in June. Because of Governor Sam Brownback's decisions, including the line-item veto of the House and Senate approved state budget that included funding for the KAC in January, the definition resonated with many Kansans, current and former. With pages voicing dissatisfaction with Brownback popping up all over Facebook, Kansas artist Emily Eakes, was determined to contribute by designing the Welcome to Brownbackistan t-shirt, now being sold on Facebook. Before the store went live, it was decided that $2 from every sale would be donated to help support the arts in Kansas. Eakes graduated from Topeka West High School and went on to get her fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute. "I had a rich arts education in the Kansas public school system and I feel every community and every student deserves access to the same." said Emily. Eakes initially sought partnerships with local arts organizations. She quickly discovered that regardless of their individual opinions, they didn't want to risk offending patrons nor donors. Organizations that will receive the donation dollars will not be released until after the donations are made. # # # The Welcome to Brownbackistan T-shirt shop is live! $2 from every shirt sold will go to help support the arts in Kansas. I'm also designing a postcard....could be cool :) Welcome to Brownbackistan 07/10/2011
The Urban Dictionary definition started circulating on Facebook. A couple of friends from high school had the idea to make it a t-shirt. I took it form there. This image is the design I created for the t-shirt. The idea was so simple and clever so I wanted to design to reflect that. The sunflower and the outline of the shape directly reference Kansas and the western style font conjures notions of the wild west. After designing the shirt, I got in contact with a great friend who's business savvy. We decided to partner on getting the shirt out there. In the process we added another partner and she recommended donating a portion the sales to the arts in Kansas—brilliant! We've had a few glitches getting the storefront to work on the Welcome to Brownbackistan Facebook page but we will have t-shirts ready to order soon! And $2 from every shirt sold will go to help support the arts in Kansas :) Very excited! | Authoremily eakes, a.k.a filthEdesign—printmaker, graphic designer, mother, wife, friend, daughter, sister, freelancer, liver of life based in Lawrence, KS, but available world-wide.
